An account of our holiday in Irpinia – Le nostre vacanze in Irpinia

Last September, this English couple spent their holiday here in Irpinia: this is what they told us about. Lo scorso settembre, questa coppia inglese ha trascorso un breve periodo di vacanza qui da noi in Irpinia: ecco quello che ci hanno raccontato.

Why did you decide to come on holiday to Irpinia? Come mai avete deciso di venire in vacanza proprio in Irpinia?
We have travelled in Italy on other occasions because we have relatives in Bologna and Sicily. This time we wanted to stay somewhere in land and in the mountains to experience rural Italy and not to be on the tourist routes, but also spend a little time seeing Pompeii, Vesuvius and Herculaneum. After finding Villa Alma, in Altavilla Irpina, on TripAdvisor we decided that it would be the ideal place as we could drive to the main touristy places and return to a quiet setting far away from the big city. Avevamo già viaggiato in Italia, perché abbiamo dei parenti a Bologna ed in Sicilia. Stavolta volevamo viverne la campagna e la montagna al di fuori degli itinerari turistici, e perché no anche vedere un po’ di Pompei, di Ercolano e del Vesuvio. Quando su TripAdvisor abbiamo trovato Villa Alma, ad Altavilla Irpina, abbiamo subito pensato che avrebbe potuto essere la sistemazione ideale per noi, da cui poter facilmente raggiungere in auto le attrazioni turistiche di nostro interesse, e far ritorno in giornata ad un alloggio tranquillo lontano dalla grande città.

What you expected, what you found. Che cosa vi aspettavate, cosa avete trovato.
We expected and we were a little worried that we would have a problem finding Villa Alma and the small village of Altavilla but we need not have worried, the motorways in this area are excellent and well signed and the scenery as we came into the mountains was beautiful. The smaller roads are very narrow in parts but our home is in Devon, England and we are used to narrow twisting roads. We were delighted to find Villa Alma and the nearby village of Altavilla was exactly what we wanted, the mountains and the Italian people are so kind and welcoming. Although our Italian is not good the shops, bars and cafes were all very helpful and pleasant. When we first arrived in Avellino we shopped in a large supermarket but subsequently, used the local shops in Altavilla because we like to support the local economy and the cheeses, bread, meat and wines are delicious. I think that we were the only tourist in Altavilla and this we liked very much. It was good to live in among the ordinary Italian people and sit in the piazza and drink delicious Italian coffee. Temevamo che sarebbe stato complicato raggiungere Villa Alma ed il paesino di Altavilla, ma non è stato così; le strade in zona sono eccellenti e ben segnalate, ed il paesaggio montano è molto bello. Alcuni percorsi minori possono essere a tratti assai stretti, ma a casa nostra in Inghilterra, nel Devon, siamo abituati ai tracciati angusti e tortuosi. E siamo rimasti davvero entusiasti di aver trovato Villa Alma ed Altavilla proprio come avevamo desiderato che fossero, e la gente così gentile: nonostante non parlassimo un buon italiano, nei negozi e nei bar ci hanno sempre accolto e servito con piacere e sollecitudine. Passando da Avellino avevamo fatto una prima spesa in un supermercato, ma poi ci siamo rivolti ai negozi di Altavilla, perché volevamo sostenere l’economia locale; e in effetti i formaggi, il pane, la carne ed il vino erano buonissimi. Eravamo probabilmente i soli turisti ad Altavilla, e questo ci è piaciuto moltissimo, perché abbiamo potuto cogliere l’occasione per noi unica di vivere le nostre giornate proprio come fanno gli italiani, ed anche di sedere in piazza a sorseggiare quel loro delizioso caffè!

The city of Naples and his famous coastal area are considered among the most stunning travel destinations in the world: how are they in your opinion connected, both in the physical and emotional meaning, with the region’s inner mountain area local mood? Napoli, e la sua famosa costiera, sono da tutti considerate una delle più belle e desiderate destinazioni al mondo: voi che avete visitato anche l’interno della Campania, in che rapporto lo vedete con quei posti così famosi?
Of course we visited the touristy places of Vesuvius, Pompeii and Herculaneum but we were disappointed because Pompeii and Vesuvius have become so commercialised and so busy with too many tourists and we were glad to be once again in rural Irpina on our return to Villa Alma. However Herculaneum was amazing. We were privileged and delighted to join a guided tour to see the “Hidden treasures of Avellino“ and we were shown so many beautiful and historic places that we would never have found in this lovely Italian city, Avellino. We made many new Italian friends who are passionate about the art, poetry, food, traditions and architecture and the magnificence of the mountains among which they live. The city of Naples and the surrounding coastal area is truly beautiful but the pace of life there is so fast and exhausting and this is in complete contrast to the magical tranquillity and majesty of the mountains and the villages of Irpinia. The moods of the ever changing mountains are a joy to wake up to. Each morning a different sky and a different light. I only took a small sketch book with me and I felt compelled to capture in paint the colours as clouds moved and mountains changed from greens to blues. The storms were magnificent and we stayed on the balcony for hours watching the lightening. Irpinia has a wealth of castles and archaeological sites to explore and we have already made a list of more to visit next time. We spent a wonderful day in Atripalda discovering the Roman remains and another in Montevergine, visiting the magnificent monastery and sampling the amazing views from the top of the mountain. Summonte afforded another day of discovery and fine food. September was a good time to be there to enjoy all the nuts, fruits, grapes, apples, figs, and cyclamen in the garden and on the roadside, the weather was excellent. Market day is on Sunday in Altavilla and we were able to buy fresh produce from the locals. On our last day we had lunch at the restaurant Peluso on the road just below Altavilla and ate the local pasta and drank the delicious local wine Greco di Tufo. We will return!!!!! Patricia and John Butler, Appledore, Devon, UK Ovviamente siamo stati sul Vesuvio, a Pompei ed ad Ercolano, ma ci ha un tantino deluso averle trovate così affollate, commerciali e turistiche; invece era bello per noi ritornare ogni sera in campagna a Villa Alma. Anche se comunque Ercolano è incredibile. Ci ha lusingato e divertito partecipare ad un tour della “Avellino nascosta”, ci hanno fatto vedere tante curiosità storiche che non saremmo mai riusciti a trovare da soli. E ci siamo fatti tanti nuovi amici italiani, appassionati come noi di arte, poesia, buona tavola, tradizioni e architettura delle loro bellissime montagne. Napoli e la costiera sono davvero belle, ma molto stressanti, in totale contrasto con la magica tranquillità della maestosa montagna irpina, sotto i cui colori cangianti è una vera gioia potersi svegliare ogni giorno: ogni mattina un nuovo cielo ed una nuova luce. Non ho potuto fare a meno di fissarne i colori sul mio album da disegno, man mano che le nuvole vagavano nel cielo e le colline viravano dal verde al blu. E i temporali erano impressionanti, siamo rimasti per ore in terrazza a guardare i lampi. L’Irpinia è ricca di castelli e di siti archeologici da esplorare, e ci siamo già fatti una lista di quelli da vedere la prossima volta. Abbiamo passato una splendida giornata ad Atripalda, alla scoperta delle rovine romane, e un’altra a Montevergine, al magnifico santuario e ad ammirare il paesaggio dalla cima della montagna. E Summonte ci ha regalato un’altra giornata di sorprese e ottima tavola. Settembre qui è il periodo ideale per godersi le noci e le nocciole, l’uva, le mele, i fichi, i ciclamini in giardino e lungo le strade: il tempo è stato bellissimo. Il giorno di mercato settimanale ad Altavilla è la domenica, abbiamo potuto comprare ortaggi, verdura e prodotti freschi dai contadini. L’ultimo giorno, siamo stati a pranzo al Ristorante Peluso, che si trova lungo la strada che passa al di sotto del paese, dove abbiamo gustato la pasta fatta a mano e bevuto lo squisito vino locale, il Greco di Tufo.
